a new bit

Augusta Longbottom was visiting her son and daughter in-law. She was holding the hand of her son, Frank, who was lying on his bed while his wife Alice was walking around by his side. Suddenly the two were both upright and wide-eyed, frightening the usually unflappable Augusta.

Frank spoke for the first time in 14 years, “Neville will need a new wand”, and he said looking at his flabbergasted mother, “Tell him Thank-you”, finished Alice before she collapsed on top of her husband’s body.

The nurse ran in and pronounced them dead. The two appeared to be smiling. Happy over the fact that they had finally been released.

Augusta, though, had no time to mourn. The witch on duty, who had just declared her son dead had put a hand on her shoulder as the sound of the emergency sirens roared of new arrivals.

Augusta (both mourning and terrified) knew one of those new arrivals was her grandson as a tear slipped down her cheek.

In a trancelike state she allowed the nurse to guide her down to emergency.

revised

When I was a young cat, just a few moons after being made a warrior, I fell in love with a Riverclan cat, his name was Appledusk. He was very handsome. He treated me so wonderfully that I truly believed every purr that came from his smooth talking muzzle. I did not knows he was mated, her name was Reedshine, or that he had several other she-cats he visited in each and every clan.

Crookedstar looked up from the digging at Mapleshade, shock radiating from his pelt. This was not the same Appledusk he heard stories about!

After several moons, I discovered that I was going to have kits! I was so excited. We were going to bring peace to our clans, these kits would be so loved by both Thunderclan and Riverclan. He agreed. He suggested that as soon as they were old enough that I should bring them to Riverclan, but that wasn’t to be. During the last battle over Sunning Rocks, Oakstar’s son, Birchface was killed along with his apprentice, Flowerpaw. Oakstar and Thunderclan held Appledusk responsible. A tragic accident is what Appledusk told me. And at the time, I ACTUALLY BELIEVED THAT LYING FURBALL!, she yowled loudly enough to wake the whole forest.

“Anyway, I had just entered the nursery, Frecklewish, who I thought was my best friend, was still mourning the loss of her brother. She convinced herself that since her brother and I were friendly, these kits must be his. I was sore and tired, so why bother correcting her. Pretty soon she had the entire camp believing it. I didn’t say a word. I convinced myself that not telling anyone wasn’t really lying since I never said who the father was.” She sighed and continued, Ravenwing, the medicine cat, decided I was a traitor and went to Oakstar. I begged her to let me tell Oakstar and the clan once the kits were a bit older. She told me that my kits should never have been born. We were thrown out into the night. I begged to let my kits eat and rest first. It was cold and the river swollen, but no. We had to leave right then!”

You can ask Darkstar and Oakstar once you go to Starclan, but the curse was all mine. The mother of the two-leg kit I rescued, found me and asked the two leg cat goddess Bast to determine my fate. I saw the bright light of silverpelt when the two leg mother dug a grave for me. She said that my saving her kit showed I deserved to be judged well.

Starclan and the two leg cat goddess felt although my crimes should be punished in the Black Forest, I would hear the cries of any kit who needed a mother’s love. That is how when Rainflower had you renamed after your accident I heard your heart cry out, “Don’t you love me anymore mother”. They could determine for themselves, as you did, whether to stay or not once they realized that I was not a Starclan cat but rather a Dark Forest one. Crookedstar bowed his head, showing the others what he rarely spoke of, the accident that cost him his original name of Storm.

Revised a bit

“For a two-leg, we need to dig deep” she mew quickly as if she felt there were foxes on her tail. Crookedstar looked at her as if he’d never truly seen her before. They were burying a two-leg kit after all, yet Crookedstar still wondered if she was up to something and decided he’d help if only to keep his eyes on her. She was still Mapleshade!, for Starclan’s sake!

Continuing as if she was noticing Crookedstar looking inquisitively at her, “The dark forest eats away at your mind and soul until you finally fade away altogether. I avenged my kits and saved the mother of this two-leg kit when she was still a kit herself. I wonder if she still remembers me?”

“I do” purred Catwoman softly as both she and the elders lay with their head on their paws (or arms in the case of Catwoman) listening to the story being told by Crookedstar as if they were kits come to hear the stories told by the elders like when they were kits.

Crookedstar continuing his story, Mapleshade went on to me “If what I did to avenge my kits as well as save the two-leg kit was deemed a crime worthy of the dark forest…I’ve no regrets. I do it again.

But I would like you to know more than what you’ve been told by cats who heard stories passed down over many moons by angry and bitter cats. You can ask Darkstar, who allowed my kits to be buried on Riverclan’s territory and Oakstar, the leader who cast me and my kits out of Thunderclan yourselve when you one day enter Starclan” she said with a quick nod at Crookedstar.

“I know what I said about your loved ones, but the curse I uttered to Reedshine all those moons ago ended when a cat named Oakheart (your brother) had kits with a cat then named Bluefur (now Bluestar). He never stopped loving her and he never lied to her. He asked Greypool (the sister of the Willowbreeze- the cat you loved) to help raise his kits (she never asked about their mother although she suspected a Thunderclan cat). When I was a young Thunderclan warrior, I too fell for a Riverclan warrior, but I wasn’t as lucky as Bluefur.”

But I would like you to know more than what you’ve been told by cats who heard stories passed down over many moons by angry and bitter cats. And now for something completely strange

This story takes place at the start of the great journey with the elders who were left behind and ends in the forest that became the new home for the clans. These cats are the sole property of Erin Hunter and any resemblance to one of her stories is seriously accidental.

A shimmering cat with stars in its fur appeared before the elders. With a bow of his head he acknowledged Catwoman. “Let me take you back several seasons” he meowed. “I, Crookedstar, was priveledged to watch a cat, then named Fireheart give a life to a lifeless two leg” he indicated Catwoman with a flick of his tail. There was me and my deputy Leopardfur. Bluestar and Tigerclaw for Thunderclan, Tallstar and Mudclaw for Windclan, and Brokenstar and Nightpelt for Shadowclan.” He continued, “two days later is when it happened. I saw a cat I recognized from my childhood, she was dragging something by the remains of some sort of white pelt. It was bloated from the lake water and had the scent of something dead. She looked up at me and purred that she knew I would obviously not trust her ever again, but begged that I would please listen to the story she had to tell while her mind was still clear enough to tell it. I nodded in agreement.”

“You know me, but you only know the stories told by those that believed I was solely responsible for all that happened. You witnessed Fireheart give a new life to that two leg woman not more than two moons ago, but did you know that when she was a kit, I saved her? I watched from the shadows as she fell from that two leg nest with her kit pulled to her body, wishing she could break its fall.”

The others heard the cries of a mother coming from Catwoman, as Catwoman looked to Crookedstar hoping for news of her child.

Crookedstar continued his story, “I’m burying this kit where Darkstar buried my kits so many moons ago, said Mapleshade.”

There was an audible gasp from the elders when they heard the name, having been brought up to believe that she was a kit killer.

“Hopefully Starclan will keep the bees from my brain long enough for me to tell you my side of the story” she hissed.
